Engineering Traditions

These are the Executives of the Engineering Students' Society. These elite individuals are responsible for making your year the best it can be by organizing events throughout the year and providing you with connections to other organizations on and off Campus. This is no easy feat, especially given that they do it while maintaining good grades and a constant state of drunkenness.

These are the Managers of the Engineering Students' Society. They are individuals specialized in an area that support and aid the Executive members in completing their roles. They work hard to ensure every detail is looked after, no matter how major or minor. The Managers get the grunt of the work, but are excellent at what they do and should not be overlooked.

There is only one blue hat. This person is the 101 Week Coordinator and has been given special distinction for their service to the most fun event of the year. Deserves the same level of reverence to the White-Hats during 101 Week.

These are the members of the 101 week committee. They are the masterminds behind all the events/activities during the week. These dark blue hats are crucial in ensuring everything runs smoothly. They are just like your regular guides, except they have specialized knowledge in all things 101 week and report to the 101 week coordinator.

During 101 week, these are your Head Guides. After the Executives, they are the next in charge of making your 101 week safe and an incredible time. Ask them anything and they'll be more than happy to help and anything they say is to be considered law for the week.

These are your 101 week guides. These brave souls, along with the Executives and Head Guides, have given up their drinking privileges for all of 101 week so that you, the 101er can have a blast! Respect all those in purple; when they talk, you listen.

Yellow makes the innocent easy to spot. But be proud of your Hard Hat... The yellow just means you aren't an experienced Engineering Student yet. Study hard and go out to lots of fun events and you'll move up in the ranks in no time!

Many years ago, the Keepers were assigned a great task: To find a mascot that would represent the uOttawa engineering students for years to come. After countless debates, they finally agreed on the bunny. Bunnies are a symbol of success, sustainability and survival, purely through their mass need/ability to procreate. To the Keepers' surprise, after capturing their new mascot they realized that he was no ordinary bunny. He would soon manage to obtain all four of the engineering degrees at the same time, while partying harder than any other uOttawa student. He was named Otis.

Things to know about Otis:
Otis' namesake is the company that engineered the elevators for CBY and most other campus buildings.
He lives in CBY… (The Bunny Cave…shhh)
Otis tends to be drunk whenever he's not working, thus earning him the nickname, "The Drunken Bunny."

Three faceless, hooded figures guard the Cast Iron Tool with their lives. Nobody knows where they came from, but they make appearances at social events to bless us with the presence of the tool. Though it is common practice to steal engineering relics from rival schools, we have the keepers to thank that our tool has never been stolen in our history. They deserve your utmost respect and reverence. Always remember that it is a great privilege to bear witness to the tool.

Originating in 1922, the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer acknowledges and welcomes graduating engineers into the Canadian Engineering Profession. The Iron Ring is a constant reminder meant to direct toward consciousness of ethics, morals, and social significance in the profession. Worn on the little finger of the working hand, the ring signifies the pride, unity and responsibility we have in our profession. It is important to always shake the hand of Iron Ring holders, for they have succeeded in the difficulties you are about to face.
